Bird sightings as we move into autumn

As summer slips into fall, here are the latest bird sightings provided by Dave DeReamus, of Eastern PA Birdline, which is sponsored by the Lehigh Valley Audubon Society. The sighting were reported during the week ending September 21.

Sightings from WILLIAMS TOWNSHIP, Northampton County, included:
Mourning Warbler - 1 on 9/13 and 9/14.
Also Blackburnian Warbler and Lincoln's Sparrow.

Sightings from the MONOCACY NATURE CENTER, Northampton County, included:
Yellow-billed Cuckoo and Wilson's Warbler.

Sightings from LITTLE GAP, Carbon County, included:
Connecticut Warblers - 2 on 9/15.
Also Palm, Prairie, and Blackburnian Warbler, and Lincoln's Sparrow

Broad-winged Hawk
Sightings from BAKE OVEN KNOB, Lehigh County, included:
Ospreys - 44 on 9/17
Bald Eagles - 10 on 9/15; 9 on 9/16; 14 on 9/17
Broad-winged Hawks - 856 on 9/14; 1302 on 9/17; 1538 on 9/20
Golden Eagle - 1 on 9/20
Merlins - 4 on 9/15; 3 on 9/17
Peregrine Falcon - 1 on 9/17
Philadelphia Vireo - 1 on 9/16.
Also Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Common Raven, and Blue headed and Yellow-throated Vireo.

Sightings from LEHIGH FURNACE GAP, Lehigh County, included:
Broad-winged Hawks - 764 on 9/14
Northern Goshawk - 1 on 9/14.
Also Common Raven.

Sightings from UPPER MACUNGIE TOWNSHIP, Lehigh County, included:
Rufous Hummingbird - 1 from 9/9 to at least 9/18 (at a private feeder).

Sightings from PEACE VALLEY PARK, Bucks County, included:
Great Egret.

Sightings from MERRILL CREEK RESERVOIR in nearby New Jersey included:

Bald Eagles - 9 on 9/15; 8 on 9/19
Broad-winged Hawks - 1507 on 9/15; 1741 on 9/16; 2439 on 9/17; 2105 on 9/20
Merlins - 3 on 9/19
Peregrine Falcons - 1 on 9/16; 2 on 9/20
Yellow-Billed Flycatcher - 1 on 9/15.

Red-breasted Nuthatch was found at several sites this past week.



FIELD TRIP NOTE: A field trip to Scotts Mountain Hawkwatch at Merrill Creek Reservoir in nearby New Jersey is schedule for September 30.  Meet at the Park & Ride lot at the William Penn Highway exit of Route 33, just south of Route 22, at 7:30 a.m.  Dave DeReamus will be leading this trip.
