Songbird safety: cats

While "Fluffy" may be cute indoors, the cat becomes a killer outside. Cats are the most significant non-native animal species affecting the decline of songbird populations.

What can you do? Belling a cat does not work for preventing bird deaths. Instead, keep cats indoors. They adjust to indoor living and actually live longer. They're less likely to acquire fleas and other pests, and won't be harmed in fights with other cats. You also won't have to deal with unplanned mating either.

What can you do about feral cats? Take precautions to give songbirds a fighting chance. Leave 20 feet of space between feeders and shrubs so birds can see lurking cats. You can try putting citrus peels around bushes to keep the cats from lurking under the bushes.
