'Project Puffin' photographer to discuss Atlantic seabirds

Atlantic Puffin
It may be a long drive, but for those who enjoy Atlantic Puffins, the comical-looking seabirds, a trip to Honesdale on July 7 will be worth your time.

Chris Fischer, a Pennsylvania photographer who documented the work of the National Audubon Society's Project Puffin last year, will discuss puffins at a meeting of the Northeast Pennsylvania Audubon Society.

Fischer will present his eye-catching photography from his work last spring and summer on the islands in the Gulf of Maine. He will discuss his involvement in Project Puffin, a 40-year-long effort to restore the seabirds to their original habitat in Maine. Fischer will display photographs of Atlantic Puffins, as well as Razorbills and Storm-petrels. He also will offer a "behind the scenes" look at the life of a seabird biologist.

The program is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, July 7, at the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, which is located at 32 Commercial Street in Honesdale. For information, call 570-253-9250 or visit the Northeast Pennsylvania Audubon Society's website.

Fischer, a freelance photographer based in northeastern Pennsylvania, has done nature, travel, commercial, editorial and fine art work in 20 countries on six continents. An avid birder, he serves as president of the Northeast Pennsylvania Audubon Society.

The National Audubon Society started Project Puffin in 1973 in an effort to restore Atlantic Puffins to their historic nesting islands in the Gulf of Maine. Puffins are not an endangered species (they are abundant in Newfoundland, Iceland and Britain) but they were wiped out in the United States in the 1880s when hunters took the last survivors of a once-flourishing colony in Maine. As of last year, there are now about 1,000 nesting pairs of puffins on five Maine islands in the area between Portland and Rockland.

The July 7 program is a great way to learn more about these unusual creatures and the diligent efforts to bring them back to this country.
