Audubon Society to visit Conowingo Dam on December 5

Bald Eagle
The Lehigh Valley Audubon Society is sponsoring an all-day trip to Conowingo Dam in Maryland on Saturday, December 5. The goal: Bald Eagles, which regularly winter at the site, and a wide variety of gulls.

Meet at  9 a.m. at the Tilghman Square parking lot, close to the Red Robin restaurant, for carpooling to the dam.

The weather might be wintry, so dress in laters. The amount of walking is minimal but be sure to have warm footwear. Be prepared to spend time outdoors by the water. A pavilion and restrooms are available. Bring a scope if you have one. Also, be prepared to bring cash to share the cost of the ride with the driver.

The trip on the way to Conowingo Dam is a great excuse to partake of breakfast delicacies at the Lancaster Central Market, the oldest continuously operating farmers market in the nation. On the return trip through Lancaster, a dinner buffet is planned at Shady Maple. Be sure to bring cash for your meals.

Conowingo Dam, located near the town of Havre de Grace in Maryland, is a major hydroelectric dam at the mouth of the Susquehanna River. Conowingo is considered one of the best place east of the Mississippi River to view Bald Eagles because the birds are nearly always present in numbers and viewing conditions are excellent. It's not unusual to see 20 Bald Eagles, according to the Harford Bird Club, which covers the region.

In addition, large numbers of Ring-billed, Herring, Great Black-backed and Bonaparte's gulls are present at various times from mid-October through mid-March. Lesser Black-backed, Iceland and Glaucous gulls are common. Rarer species include Thayer's, Slated-backed, California, Common, Common Black-backed, Little, Franklin's and Laughing gulls. Numerous species of shorebirds and waterfowl also are present.
