Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are on track to arrive in the Lehigh Valley by mid-April, so there's no better time than to learn more about these diminutive and high-energy creatures than by attending a program being offered by the Lehigh Valley Audubon Society.
"Jewels in the Garden—Fascinating Hummingbirds" will be presented on Friday, April 15, at 7 p.m. at the Wildlands Conservancy Education Center Building. The site is located on the Wildlands Conservancy at 3701 Orchard Place, off Route 29 in Emmaus. Scott Burnet will discuss these captivating birds.
The program is part of the Audubon Society's monthly meeting but the public is invited to attend. The program is a good way to become acquainted with fellow bird-watchers and to learn about the work the Audubon Society performs in the Lehigh Valley.
Ruby-throats usually arrive in the Lehigh Valley around mid-April. The latest report from the online service Hummingbirds.net indicates they are right on target this year. Of course, a lot depends on the weather. A sudden cold wave or windy weather could throw them off schedule.
According to the latest reports as of Saturday, a hummingbird has been sighted as far north as Virginia, a few miles from the North Carolina state line. Numerous sightings have occurred in the Carolinas during the past week.
