Stocking stuffer: Scramble Squares

These colorful puzzles will be a test for everyone, regardless of age. Kids will love the bright colors, and adults will love the challenge.

Each Scramble Square puzzle consists of nine squares that form a design when arranged correctly. Each individual square has only half of a different design on each side. You must match each side to complete the puzzle.

It seems simple enough. Placing the first few pieces is easy. But when you're down to one or two pieces that don't match up, that's where the challenge begins! It takes a lot of thinking and imagining to arrange and rearrange the pieces until you get all nine squares placed in the right order. Solving the puzzle requires a plenty of determination and a bit of time!

We had a long-standing offer to give away a puzzle if a customer can solve it while at the store. The customer will sometimes spend 10 minutes shifting the puzzle pieces around, only to leave scratching their heads when two or three of the squares don't match up! After 13 years in business, we've given out only three Scramble Square puzzles!

Scramble Squares are ideal stocking-stuffers as Christmas gifts. And consider buying one just for yourself. The puzzles are a great way to pass gloomy winter weekend afternoons.

We carry a range of colorful designs, including North American birds, hummingbirds, penguins, owls, woodpeckers and wetland birds. Also available are other natural creatures (ladybugs, frogs, turtles and dragonflies) and the roses.

Hurry in for the best selection!

New Product: ClickShield for bird baths

If you have a heated bird bath, you probably would like to place it in a wide open location for the best viewing. But that requires an extension cord. How to do you keep the connection safe from the elements?

The ClickShield provides a safe, fast and inexpensive way to weatherproof any outdoor power cord. The durable plastic device has a ratchet mechanism; when you hear the "click," you know the electric cords are securely locked. The internal gasket assures a water-resistant electrical connection.

The ClickShield also eliminates accidental disconnections that interrupt the power supply.

Say goodbye to wrapping power cords with duct tape or plastic bags—methods that aren't really safe anyway.

Although the device is ideal for heated bird baths, it also will come in handy for Christmas decorations or any outdoor electrical equipment.

Holiday gift-giving ideas

The holidays are finally here. Are you ready? Find gifts for every bird-lover on your list at The Bird House. You can find something that's personal and thoughtful—something that will be enjoyed for a long time to come. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Birds need water during every season of the year. Winter's cold temperatures can make it difficult for them to find fresh water.

The solution? A heated baths or the addition of a heating unit to an existing bath. We have many styles of heated baths to choose from. They can be mounted on a pole, such as the one at the right. Others can be attached to a deck railing or placed on the ground.

The holidays are a perfect time to get a new feeder or bird house. They make great gifts.

There are new tube feeders made specifically to be easily cleaned. The "Clever Cleaner" feeder has no perches that go through the tube and the bottom twists out so it can be thoroughly cleaned. Droll Yankees has a "Ring Pull" system that releases the perches and bottom of the feeder so it can be completely cleaned.

We carry a line of Droll Yankees feeders and accessories.

We have recycled hopper-style feeders from Wisconsin that have either red or blue roofs. They're functional and add a splash of color to your backyard. They're also made of the same kind of polylumber used as decking material. These feeders do not warp, twist, crack or fade. And of course the popular "Going Green" recycled feeders remain available.

We have a variety of squirrel-proof feeders that really do work.

We've received positive feedback from customers who bought any of the Brome Squirrel Buster line of feeders. Shown here is the Squirrel Buster Plus. Birds can alight on the ringed perch to feed but the heavier weight of the squirrel causes the all-metal seed ports to shut, leaving one unhappy squirrel.

We offer Droll Yankees' Flipper, which spins the squirrel off the perch when it tries to feed. Great fun to watch! We also have the Whipper and the Dipper whose perches collapse from the weight of the squirrel but most birds can easily sit and feed.

Mailbox covers are back! Spruce up your roadside mailbox. The covers are magnetic and attach to any standard-size metal box. We have an assortment of holiday or winter designs.

Two favorite sunflower seed feeders are back: Mr. Snowman and Mrs. Snowman. Birds cling to them and pluck out the black oil sunflower seeds. It is fun to watch their antics.

Bird houses always are a good choice. There are plenty from which to select.

We have houses for bluebirds, wrens, chickadees, titmice and other species.

We have a variety of bird houses made right here in Bethlehem and in Nazareth. They are unique, beautiful and functional. Some of the houses are made from wooden barns that had stood locally for 150 years.

We also have bird house kits so everyone can get involved in helping backyard birds.

During these cold and blustery days and nights, birds benefit from shelter. We have "Roosting Pockets" that are ideal. Small birds can snuggle into one of these pockets to keep themselves warm when the weather turns frigid.

Don't forget that we have great stocking stuffers—including designer socks! These socks are comfy, warm and good looking. Most of the designs are bird-related but we have some squirrels and chipmunks, too.

There are handcrafted aprons and placements made in Hellertown specifically for The Bird House.

The Lehigh Valley Audubon Society's updated Birds of the Lehigh Valley and Vicinity is a must-have guidebook packed with information on where to see birds in our area. The book contains excellent photos of birds you'll see locally.

Birdie Wreaths have become a holiday tradition at The Bird House. They are made completely of sunflower, safflower, peanut chips and other seed, and held together with glycerin. Many species of birds will peck at them.

What a great way for a family to pass the time together! Jigsaw puzzles are a great holiday gift. For many of us, it brings back memories of sharing good times and stories with our parents and grandparents. We have several designs.

These beautiful winter garden flags are made of an exclusive polyester blend for great durability yet they have a soft, silky feel for better drape and movement. They also are fade- and mildew-resistant.

They come in two different sizes. They're a great focal point during those drab days of winter.

The Bird House is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

We have special hours on Sundays, too. Between December 7 and December 24, you can shop Sundays from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. For those last-minute shoppers, we'll be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on December 24.

Products at The Bird House may sell quickly during the holidays, so be sure to hurry in!

Sale! 50% off on window thermometers

Here's a great bargain that's tough to pass up: 50 percent off on window thermometers. Temperatures in the spring are so unpredictable, that having a handy thermometer will prove useful when you're getting ready to go outdoors.

We have two styles, a hummingbird and a butterfly. Both are crafted from a fast-growing species of Albesia, a deciduous tree found in tropical regions of Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Madagascar.

Skilled Indonesian craftsmen carve the wood into 3-D reliefs of the hummingbird and butterfly, then paint them in nontoxic colors. A polyurethane coating protects the wood from inclement weather. The thermometer is attached to the window using two suction cups. The cups are durable, and the nice thing about them is that they can be attached and will stay put even during cold weather.

The thermometers are mercury-free and measure in both Fahrenheit and Celsius. They'd be a great convenience at your kitchen window or sunroom.

We have only a few left, so hurry in.
When they're gone, they're gone!
