Birds are on the move

We're beginning to see different birds arrive in the backyard as migration gets revved up. Some arrivals are met with mixed feelings - "Spring must be right around the corner because new birds are eating in the backyard." "Oh, but they're Grackles, Starlings and Brown-headed Cowbirds." While the grackles and starlings may have been seen sporadically during winter, now they are back in full force.

I think spring is one of the most exciting times of the migration year. Birds arrive from the southern winter spots, those who will be leaving to head north for nesting have not left yet. One year we counted 23 different species in the yard with this overlap.

Pretty soon we'll notice that the Dark-eyed Juncos and White-throated sparrows are no longer here. Then one day the Chipping Sparrows are eating the millet. To me, they are the real harbinger of spring.

For those who are watching for Hummingbirds, they have been spotted in the states around the Gulf of Mexico. We generally aim to have the hummingbird feeders out by tax time. Mid-April is when the males start arriving and the females about two weeks later. Will they be here sooner due to the warmer winter? We'll have to wait and see. I'll keep you posted.

During this time, it is helpful for those birds who migrate to keep your feeders full of sunflower seeds and white millet. Nuts add protein and fat, and fruit, such as raisins soaked in water, are treats, too.
