Some tips on wintertime batheing

Ground-fault interrupter
  • Be sure to change the bath's water every day or so, just as you would in the summer months. You wouldn't want the water to become contaminated. Some winter baths available at The Bird House have a handy tip-out feature that makes dumping old water easy.
  • Make sure to connect the electrical cord from a heated bath to an outdoor ground-fault interrupted circuit. Most electrical codes require GFIs for outdoor electric outlets. If you have a newer house, you probably have one.
  • If you need to run an extension cord from the house to the bath, make sure it is rated for outdoor use.
  • Never add antifreeze to a birdbath. Antifreeze is poisonous to birds and other animals. Likewise glycerin should not be used. Glycerin is a low-level toxin that could mat the bird's feathers, making them susceptible to hypothermia.
