Bake Oven Knob sightings for October 24

Sharp-shinned Hawks continue to be the most numerous birds seen at Bake Oven Knob atop the Appalachian ridge in Lehigh County.

A total of 820 Sharpies were seen during the week ended October 24. That's an increase of nearly 400 reports from the previous week but still shy of the peak of 1,181 sightings during the seven-day period that ended October 10.

Also reported during the week ended October 24 were Red-tailed Hawks, 236; Turkey Vultures, 59; Cooper's Hawks, 40; Bald Eagles, 39; Ospreys, 32; American Kestrels, 30; Northern Harriers, 26; Merlins, 21; Black Vultures, 17; Golden Eagles, 16; Red-shouldered Hawks, 7; Northern Goshawks, 6; and Peregrine Falcons, 4.

Canada Geese accounted for the most bird species seen at Bake Oven Knob, with 2,231 birds reported during the week. Double-breasted Cormorants numbered 76. Other species included Raven, American Crow, Blue Jay, Hairy Woodpecker, Rock Pigeon, Black-capped  Chickadee, Dark-eyed Junco, Carolina Wren, White-breasted Nuthatch, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Pine Siskins, Eastern Towhee, Great Blue Heron and Red-winged Blackbird.
