Ruby-throated Hummingbird reported in Bucks County

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are about to return to the Lehigh Valley. One sighting already has been reported in Bucks County.

The expectedly cold weather hasn't slowed down the hummingbirds. Usually they arrive in Lehigh and Northampton counties around April 15. In fact, a few hardy birds already have scooted along the Atlantic coastline to reach the New England states!

The one in Bucks County was seen on April 5 near the Telford area. Two other sightings have occurred along the southern Susquehanna River valley and five reports reached Hummingbirds.net from various New Jersey locations.

Are your hummingbird feeders ready to receive the Ruby-throats? If you have an existing feeder, it should be cleaned thoroughly. A dirty feeder can be toxic to hummingbirds. Wash the feeder by hand with a solution of diluted vinegar. Rinse thoroughly, and I mean thoroughly. Any trace of vinegar might taint the nectar.

If your feeder is past its prime, head to The Bird House for a replacement. We also have  packets of nectar specifically meant for hummingbirds.

For details on how to prepare, clean and maintain hummingbird feeders, check out these tips from our blog.

And of course, make sure your feeder is filled with nectar. The hummingbirds will need energy from their long migration!
