Birds deal with heat by panting

Tree swallow in nesing box pants to relieve overheating
Somehow we survived the brutal week of heat and humidity in July. Did you notice many birds with their beaks wide open? Birds remove excess heat by panting.

You may also notice birds lifting their wings or spreading them out to increase air circulation.

Birds also seek out a water source to help their cool themselves. Offering a dependable source of water is probably the simplest and most important step you can take to keep backyard birds comfortable during the heat.
