Don't ignore your garden

September and October is the perfect time to plant trees and shrubs that will benefit birds next year. The cool weather shows branch growth but the warm ground promotes good root growth. There usually is enough water in September and October to make roots thrive; the same can't be said for summer.

And keep in mind the types of plants that will benefit the birds for both food and shelter. The best plants are native plants, those that grow naturally in our region.

Coneflowers, for instance, are beautiful in summer, but by now they're looking a bit peaked at garden centers. Don't overlook their sad and straggly look. They'll look great next summer and next fall they'll have a huge source of seed for goldfinches.

One final thing to remember: garden centers are eager to sell out their perennials and shrubs before cold weather sets in. You'll find great prices although the selection may be limited.
